I’m a school receptionist & there are four types of GCSE parent from the ‘prom mum’ to the ‘pushy one’ – which are you?
IT’S GCSE time - and I’m a receptionist at a school in Yorkshire.
It means I get to see (and hear from) a LOT of fraught parents and teachers.
And there’s four different parents I know of - they can make or break it for the kids.
The pushy parents who think three hours of intervention each night, as well as targeted revision at home, will make the difference between a grade 8 and a grade 9.
Believe me it doesn’t help - it just means the kids are burnt out before they’ve even sat their first exam.
Meanwhile don’t get me started on the lackadaisical parents who really aren’t bothered which subjects their children are sitting, let alone inspire them to do their best.

Then there are ‘prom parents’ who think exams are secondary to the party which is a last hurrah to school days.
No, your children cannot go to prom if they don’t attend school in the first place.

Meanwhile, there’s my favourite (and the best) parents, those who really know how to support their children.
They are those who are relaxed enough to know their children will be doing their best as they have encouraged them and supported them throughout their secondary years.

No unwanted additional pressure from these parents.
They know that the teachers will be there for them, and the whole school is rooting for them. Best of luck Year 11!
