A UTAH housewife has revealed she makes her kids walk around with piggy banks and asks neighbours for leftovers to cut costs.

Being a parent is certainly not cheap - a typical family-of-five will spend around £2,400 a month on household necessites.

But one mum-of-three, from the US, has managed to find a way to get it down to just £1,100 by rationing everything and asking her neighbours for their leftovers.

Appearing on , Jordan Page, 27, said she would water down the juice ''big time'': ''One part juice to five parts water.''

When it comes to breakfast, the money-saving mum revealed she gives her children 14 cereal flakes.

''We call it rationing,'' before adding that if one of her kids didn't finish the portion, it would be less the next time.

Describing his wife's habits, Jordan's hubby said: ''One a scale one to ten of being a cheapskate - ten being the highest - I'd probably say 11 or 12.''

''This is breast milk here - and we love it because it's free.

''While they're young and they don't eat very much, I freeze as much breast milk as possible.

''So when they're done, I still have a few months worth frozen to stretch it that much farther.''

Speaking to the show, Jordan revealed she has found some of her biggest savings in the family's bathroom - by cutting the use of toilet paper from 300 rolls a year down to just 40.

Although initially after getting married to her husband, the couple was struggling a little financially, Jordan's extreme money-saving measures meant they were able to purchase a property worth a million.

''I'm willing to pretty much do anything to save a buck.''

And one of these methods involves walking around the neighbourhood with a woven basket to see if anyone around has leftover food to give away.

The frugal lifestyle ensures her monthly food bill comes out to a mere $180 (£143) - and the cheapskate mum will try to spend as little on gas and electricity as well.

Desperate to save every penny possible, Jordan has also come up with quite a creative and unusual way to bake cookies - when the weather is warm and sunny, she will put the raw cookie dough into her car, and just two hours later, there will be chocolate chip cookies for everyone..

And it's this cheap thinking that led the mum to her newest - and perhaps most extreme - penny-pitching plan yet.

''There's a new trend of backyard farming [...] - we could raise a big and get a tonne of pork out of it.

''You could pay upwards of $3.50 for dozen of eggs - you pay $10 for a chicken.

''Six chickens later, you're get half a dozen of eggs a day - I mean, that's incredible.''

But whilst Jordan might love the extreme money saving measures, not everyone shared their same opinion.

''This is disturbing for the fact that she has money to buy nice clothes, hair and makeup, yet she cuts corners on her kids nutrition,'' read one of the top comments.
