I’m a decorating expert – why purple is the WORST colour to paint your bedroom and could be ruining your sleep

COLOURS play a huge role in the way our mind reacts to the environment surrounding us.

Different colours, shades and hues all affect our mood - and turns out, your favourite colour may be the reason you're having trouble sleeping at night.

To make sure you have a better night's sleep, Hannah Cooley, Product Manager at , shared her top Dos and Don'ts when it comes to interior design and picking the right colours.

''In order to get a good night's sleep, you’ll want to avoid any bright and intense colours in your bedroom and focus on soft, dusty tones to promote relaxation and help you doze off.''

For this, the whizz recommended opting for blue shades.

''Blue lowers your heart rate making it easier for you to fall asleep,'' she explained.

''It’s such a classic colour that a lot of people turn to as their bathroom colour because a lot of shades are named after the sea, such as ocean blue or marine blue.''

On the other hand, purple is a colour you should avoid at all costs, Hannah advised.

''Rumour has it, purple is one of the worst colours for your bedroom.''

This, she added, is because ''it can subconsciously provoke vivid dreams and nightmares due to its distracting effects''.

Winding down is an important part of your daily routine, especially once you're done with all the adulting responsibilities.

''The living room is a key room that absorbs most of the daily stress you may bring home, so it's important to style it so it deflects any negativity,'' the expert said.

A colour Do here, according to her, is pink.

''The colour pink is not just for girly bedrooms, it has a calming effect on the nerves and helps relieve feelings of anger and neglect.

''Go for a dusty pink that’s easy on the eyes to help you wind down once you come home after a long day at work.''

As much as we love earthy tones and neutrals, it might be worth to give brown a miss this time - especially a deeper shade.

''Dark brown is associated with negativity and can feel gloomy in your room, so it probably won’t help when you aren’t feeling the best.''

Revealing the list of Dos and Don'ts, Hannah also shared other mood-boosting colours to incorporate in your home - and green tones is a must.

''Decorate your bathroom with houseplants and green accessories such as your bathmats, soap dispenser and towels.

''These are all small changes that can have a huge impact on your mood.

''Green is a colour that has been favoured for its refreshing quality, so it’s perfect to look at when you wake up.''

Another colour to avoid when decorating your home is red - while we do love a red lippy, this colour is too powerful for interiors.

''When you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, red is probably not the best colour to immerse yourself in.

''It can be quite incense and heighten feelings of aggression and stress,'' Hannah added.
