BABY BUDGET

I’m a DIY savvy mom & created an extra ROOM in our apartment to make a nursery on the cheap using Home Depot bargains

CREATING a nursery for your baby doesn't have to be outrageously expensive.

An expectant mom and dad have revealed how they created a second bedroom for their daughter by “splitting their home in half” with a temporary partition – which cost just $500.

When Allison Ramos, a 26-year-old drug prevention counselor from New York, US, found out she was pregnant, husband Zach, 29, set about building the extra room in their apartment.

Zach, a splicing apprentice for an energy supply company, worked for a fortnight to build the room.

The renovation involved creating a temporary partition with drywall and plaster, which could then be painted but removed later if they moved.

Once renovations were complete Alison then chose a boho rainbow theme for the stunning nursery, painting the walls pastel pink, adding rope baskets, wooden drawers, a bookshelf, and a rainbow mural.

She also matched up her crib with rainbow bedding and a rainbow mobile.

“Since our living room is so big and we weren’t utilizing the back of it much, we decided to ask our landlord for permission to put up a temporary wall that will be taken down when we leave so we can separate the baby’s things from our living room,” Allison, who is currently 35 weeks pregnant.

“It took my husband about two weeks to build the room. He was extremely focused and worked on it non-stop when he came home from work and on the weekend.

“This cost us around $500 for all of the materials and paint. Everything was purchased at Home Depot.”

Allison shared the thrifty renovation on TikTok (), and the clip has been viewed over 5.3 million times, leaving parents dying to know how they did it.

Parents watching the clip were quick to comment on the renovation, with one user saying: “Perfect space!”

Another person commented: “Omg this is so adorable and nice!”

Others were quick to snap up decor tips with one person asking: "Can I ask? Where did you get that rainbow tapestry?”

“Better than my room!” another person added.

"So nice," agreed another user.

The room will be used to store their little one’s clothes, but the couple intend for her to sleep in a bassinet in the main bedroom until she is a little older.

Allison added: “This is something that is very common in NYC. This apartment was not only a steal price-wise, but large enough to do this and still have plenty of room while we can save up as much as possible for a down payment on a house. To us, it’s a win-win!”

“I never expected this video to go viral. I’m getting a lot of questions on my TikTok like ‘why don’t you just move?’ – this is a very privileged question.

“Renting even a one-bedroom in NYC is extremely expensive, as well as buying a house. We do not plan on being here for more than two years.

“This apartment gives us the opportunity to save up so we can afford a house. The baby has everything she could possibly need, and I appreciate the concern, but we are just fine!”
