In the hypothetical scenario, Keys found that Delta offered the cheapest round trip but United Airlines offered a one way ticket for $206 while Delta offered a one way ticket for $185. If a traveler opted to use the hack, they would be saving $33.
"Sometimes the round-trip price isn't the best available price and it's worth the little bit of extra time to find the best deal," Scott's Cheap Flights product operations specialist Lousson Smith told the publication.
Booking two different one-way tickets can offer flexibility for people that encounter flight credit issues, insufficient miles, or another restrictive payment problem.

If someone is booking an international flight or flying out on JetBlue or United, it would be a better deal to find a round trip ticket.
"If you really need to bring bags on your trip, it may sometimes work in your favor to just pay for a normal round-trip ticket on an airline like Delta, which includes a free carry-on with the cheapest fares, or Southwest that would include a carry-on and up to two checked bags at no additional cost," Smith told the publication.
It's always ideal for travelers to look for flights early and frequently.
"Start looking earlier than you think so you can really take advantage of price drops when they happen," Smith told the publication.
Smith also suggested that travelers turn Google price alerts for specific routes so they will know when the cheapest flight is available.

Scott's Cheap Flights also offer a similar service, alerting customers about different deals for someone's primary airport.
"Also, if you have a little flexibility about when you can travel, opt to travel in the middle of the week when prices are generally a little lower since they don't coincide with a lot of major business travel," Smith told the publication.
