I’m a gardening expert and you’ve been potting your plants all wrong… you need to use a coffee filter

KEEPING your house plants in check is a tough job for those of use who are trying to nuture a nature filled house.

Plants need drainage, which means having holes in the bottom on their pots, but that can mean mucky water and soil can come out onto your surfaces and floor.

Gardening experts at shared their pro tip for keeping your houseplants nice and tidy.

They recommended that you place a coffee filter in the bottom of the pot to cover the holes and there should be excess material around the interior of the pot - picture putting a paper case into a cupcake baking tray.

Next up - they suggest adding compost to the pot and try to make sure it only sits inside the coffee filter and fill it to halfway.

Then they advise keen gardeners to pop the plant in and pad it out with more compost.

The gardening experts said: “Make sure the compost around your plant is always moist with our bright idea - use a coffee filter and you can't go wrong.”

The coffee filter is the ideal way to keep the muck in the pot while still letting the plant breath.

Plus the filters are biodegrade which means you can chuck them on the compost when you're done with them in the future.
