My friend’s baby name is so ridiculous I laughed in her face, I didn’t want to be rude but I couldn’t help it

A WOMAN explained that she "couldn't help" but laugh when her friend announced her baby's name but felt guilty for the rude response.

The woman, 29, explained that she had gone to visit the new mum, 27, and baby in the hospital only to be told that the newborn boy was named English.

Taking to Reddit she said: "[My friend] didn't tell anyone if she was having a boy or girl and even wanted the baby name to be a surprise.

"At the hospital, we find out she had a baby boy. As she's cradling him, she says: 'You guys, this is English.'

"I couldn't help it at that moment. It was like a reflex. I laughed. She looked up at me and I knew she was serious.

"I stopped laughing and it was just awkward after that. She didn't say much but I could tell she was hurt.

"I tried to make small talk about the labour and what not, but I couldn't wait to get out of there.

"Right after we left, my friend told me I was a jerk and should have apologised. I do feel bad, but I don't think I was being a jerk. At least that certainly wasn't my intention."

Later the woman explained that she had made her apologies and everything was now cleared up between the friends.

She added: "However, I also found out from her sister that I was not the first person to offend her.

"Her brothers and sister teased her about it a few hours after the baby was born. She said it was her boyfriend's idea.

"When I visited her, she didn't refer to the baby by that name at all. So just maybe she's rethinking things since she's gotten flack from her family members."

Fellow Reddit members were quick to jump in with their thoughts.

One person said: "The mom's the a****** for giving her kid such a ridiculous name. Oh trust me this isn't the last time someone's gonna laugh, poor boy."

While another said: "I for one hate stupid baby names and people just don't seem to get it.

"Maybe laughing at her will make her think to rename the baby. At that point it's not too late so you might have done the baby a favour."

And a third said: "tThe mom and kid better get used to getting bad reactions to the name now, because it's going to happen more in the future.

"Especially for a boy, what kind of nicknames could you make from 'English'? At least a girl could be 'Liz' or something."

In other news, a mum revealed she regrets her baby's name and wants to change it, but says no one else agrees with her.
