YOU'RE given a name - or have chosen one - based on numerous factors: it has a deeper meaning, sounds nice, honours your culture and background, to name a few.

It's relatively easy to look up what your name means, but now also allows us to see how common it is and when it reached its peak.

For those like myself, named Kate, the tool revealed that ''you were 0.36% likely to be named Kate and 7 times more likely to be called Sophie'' in the year 1996, which is when I was born.

Other potentials my parents could've chosen from were Chloe, Jessica and Emily, all very strong candidates for those born at the same time.

This means that in 1996, this was the 59th most popular name, with 1,055 babies' parents heading to the register office with baby Kates in their hands.
