From virtual makeup to baby hair sculpting & lash botox – the A-Z of beauty trends you need to know about for 2022
FROM virtual make-up to lash Botox and baby hair sculpting, here Siobhan O’Connor reveals… The A-Z of beauty trends.
A
AUBURN MANES: Online searches for “temporary red hair dye” jumped 150 per cent, according to Google trends — thanks to celebs including Stacey Solomon and Gigi Hadid, embracing an auburn hue.
Try a DIY semi-permanent colour yourself. The Wella Professionals Semi-Permanent Colour Mask Copper Glow, is £15.70, from lookfantastic. com.
B
BUM FACIALS: It’s the year of the rear as bums get extra TLC, according to aesthetic doctor and founder of Halcyon Aesthetics.
Dr Osman Bashir Tahir says: “Steam, exfoliation, a light superficial peel and using a mask will give smoother skin and a more toned derriere.”
Start with Frank Body Booty Drops, £13.95, .
C
CLEANICAL: It’s the new buzzword for “clean” meets “clinical”, delivering efficacy but with natural ingredients and sustainability in mind.
Biotech brand Biossance creates endangered natural ingredients in a lab to avoid exhausting resources.
Use Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil, £24, .

DEW ALL OVER: A high-lighter is not just for cheekbones but the whole base.
Ideally, we want a glow from within, but in the meantime give yourself a faux glow.
Try Huda Beauty Glowish Multidew Skin Tint, £32, , which will give coverage too.
E
ESPORTS MAKE-UP: Almost half of gamers are women and now you can give your character on Sims 4 a Mac makeover, while Givenchy Beauty has created make-up for Animal Crossing.
Both games have become more inclusive with their skin tones, offering freckles, birthmarks and vitiligo for avatars, too.
F
FACE FOOD: Mushrooms, kombucha and red kidney beans — these are no longer just for our bellies but our skin too.
Skincare products have been incorporating ingredients found in the kitchen.
Try Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream, £35 for a 50ml jar, .
G
GELLED EDGES: Laying your edges is an art form because mastering baby hair swoops like Rihanna is not easy.
Use a toothbrush to place the individual hairs, or opt for a gel for your brows and baby hairs.
Try Got2b Glued 4 Brows & Edges 2-in-1 Gel, £4.49, Superdrug.
H
HIGH-PUFF HAIR: Pinterest’s beauty trend round-up for 2022 has seen searches for a love for natural texture and “high-puff hairstyles” — such as influencer Keshia East rocket by 165 per cent.
“Space buns natural hair” searches also grew 100 per cent — and the higher the look, the better.
I
ICY ORBS: Cryo- therapy will become your self-care ritual in 2022, as further tools made to be stored in the fridge or freezer bounce on to the market.
They’re designed to encourage lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness.
Try a Brushworks Cryo Roller, £24.99, .
J
JAM-PACKED: “Condensed beauty” — products serving more than one purpose and having extra ingredients — was hailed by trend forecasters The Future Laboratory.
Try Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, £14.50, , which includes niacinamide to minimise pore size.
K
KITTEN EYES: Fierce feline flicks that Adele would be proud of are taking a back seat in favour of subtler, daintier versions — welcome the Kitten Eye.
Actor Zoe Kravitz shows off the look. It uses less liner and looks less heavy.
Try E.L.F. Intense H2O Proof eyeliner pen, £6, Boots.
L
LASH BOTOX: Want a firming, lifting and strengthening boost for your lashes?
This is a hydrolyzed keratin treatment that nourishes the lashes with argan oil, keratins and proteins — making them thicker, longer and fuller.
Available for around £50 at most lash bars.
M
MARINE MANIS: Bottega green has been the hit of 2021, but a new year calls for a new nail hue and brand ambassador for OPI Georgia Rae says the look is shades of blue.
Georgia says: “Go for cobalt in summer and ultramarine in winter.”
We love OPI Nature Strong in Shore Is Something, £15.90, .
N
NINETIES BIXIE: It’s the latest hybrid hairdo — a combo of the bob and pixie cut.
The retro look, originally made famous by Cameron Diaz and Winona Ryder, needs multiple layers to give texture and dimension.
Florence Pugh is a fan.
O
ONE-THREAD LIP LIFT: Rather than plumping pouts, surgeons are expecting to see an influx in lips being lifted.
Dr Ioannis Liakas, medical director at Vie Aesthetics, says: “I believe thread-lifting treatments will be seen more throughout 2022 as they allow us to create a natural, long-lasting result with minimal invasion.”
P
PEACHY TONES: From Moschino to Rodarte, Fashion Weeks saw the welcome of peach-coloured cheeks, eyelids and lips.
So why not get a two-in-one tint for your lips and cheeks.
Try Barry M Fresh Face Cheek And Lip Tint in Peach Glow, £4.99, Superdrug — a little goes a long way.
Q
QUICK STICK: The stick-on-and-go trend is getting bigger.
Pinterest reports searches for rhinestone pedicures are up 150 per cent, tooth gems 100 per cent and crystal eyes 110 per cent.
Model Hailey Bieber, has already sported eyeshadow stickers.
At least it’s quicker than blending. Try stick-on pearls, £2.50, Claire’s.
R
RETINALDEHYDE: This is retinol’s more powerful relative.
Both are deriva-tives of vitamin A but retinaldehyde is a more potent version — working faster with less irritation.
It’s antibacterial too, which means it’s great for avoiding break-outs.
Try Medik 8 Crystal Retinal, £59, — it’s pricey but effective.
S
SLOW-AGE: The signs of growing older are inevitable, so rather than calling it “anti-ageing” and attempting to combat wrinkles completely, it is all about slowing down the process instead, dubbed “slow-ageing”.
When you spot early signs, try Vichy Slow Age day cream, £22.50, .
T
THRIFTSTORE BEAUTY: It is not just old furniture getting a second chance in life.
Discarded coffee grounds and wasted blueberries are finding their way into our skincare routines. Whole Foods called it a trend to watch out for.
See for ideas.
U
ULTRAVIOLET SHIMMER: It’s the colour purple this year, but make-up — as Zendaya shows off — is taking on a more futuristic lavender look with a UV-shimmer.
Cheeks, eyes and collar- bones will all be light-reflect-ing violet come spring.
V
VAMPY LIPS: Blood-sucking, vampire pouts, as seen on Lily Collins are a 2022 must-have, already clocking up half a million posts on TikTok.
The trick is to line lips with a dark brown then fill them in with deep burgundy.
Use L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Addiction Lipstick, £8.99, Boots.
W
WATERLESS SKINCARE: Countless beauty products come with “aqua” to dilute the product but adding water requires synthetic preservatives to prevent bacteria forming.
Going waterless is far better for the planet.
Try Nude By Nature Radiant loose powder foundation, £25, Boots.
X
X-RAY SKIN: The inside will be as important as the outside for beauty- boosting supplements.
Trendalytics says online searches for “skincare sweets” have risen by 106 per cent.
Try Yumi’s hair, skin, nails gummies, £14.99 from .
Y
YUCCA EXTRACT: A lesser known ingredient in skincare, yucca extract — taken from the root of the cassava plant — is a gentle, calming foaming agent which does not over-strip or over-dry the skin.
It can be found in PCA Skin creamy cleanser, £32, .
Z
ZERO-WASTE: It’s not new to 2022, but definitely on the rise in the year ahead.
