This year's inspirational awards included a new 999 Hero category to honour our amazing first responders, that will be handed out on stage to the winner by the Duke of Cambridge.

Those shortlisted for the award included paramedics who have stared down danger, air ambulance workers tackling harsh conditions and army officers deploying military workers to boost the front-line response to Covid-19.

The health-focused awards honour those who have helped take care of the nation, with categories including Best Doctor, Best Nurse, Best Midwife and Ultimate Lifesaver.

Other categories include Best Charity, Groundbreaking Pioneer, Unsung Hero, Young Hero and the National Lottery Award.

For this year's awards we are honouring the late TV presenter Caroline Flack, who died aged 40 in February 2020, by naming one of the awards in her honour with her family’s support.

The Caroline Flack Mental Health Hero Award recognises the incredible people who aim to make a difference in their communities - providing solace and a safe space for those who need to talk.

All winners will be revealed during the televised ceremony, with the winning healthcare heroes decided by a panel of celebrity judges.

Who Cares Wins awards

The Who Cares Wins awards honour those who have helped take care of the nation.

They had the daunting task of finding the worthiest winners out of 2,200 incredible entries across all 13 categories.

2021's judging lineup includes GMB star Kate, who has continuously praised hospital workers throughout the pandemic, especially as her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with Covid and is still battling complications from the virus.

Boxing champ Anthony Joshua also sat on the panel, alongside Penny Lancaster and comedian Matt Lucas.

They joined broadcaster Krishnan Guru-Murthy, presenter Christine Lampard and Sun columnist Deborah, who has stage four bowel cancer and knows all too well the important role doctors and nurses play.

Rounding off the judging panel was and Ellie Orton - the CEO of NHS Charities Together who was at the forefront of the Sun-backed Covid-19 Urgey Appeal to help raise more than £150million for the NHS.

She said of this year's awards: "After the last 18 months, these awards are going to be incredibly special.

"I’m expecting it to be incredibly emotional – not just to have everyone in a room together, but to be able to celebrate key workers.”

The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards will be broadcast on Channel 4 and All 4 on Sunday at 7.30pm.
