A SINGLE mum-of-four has built a loft in her children’s bedroom for just £250 - and she did it all herself, using second-hand materials including old decking and fence posts.
Becky Alsop, 35, is mum to her four children – Beth, 16, Kaci, 14, Kayden, 10, and seven-year-old Freddie – who all live together in a three-bedroom house in the UK.
She wanted to create more space for Kayden and Freddie, who share a room, as there was not enough space for all of their belongings.
In a stroke of inspiration, she decided to design and build their very own loft inside the room.
“The bedroom wasn't big enough for all the things the children had – plus they had their gaming consoles and monitors,” Becky said.
“I sat down for days and drew this idea up, with a few tweaks along the way to get the outcome I wanted.

“We had just taken over a new property 10 weeks ago which needed updating, so this was my perfect opportunity to refurbish their room.”
Becky used a piece of wood to make the frame, which she fixed to the wall with loft boarding at the top and cut to size.
She used reclaimed decking posts cut in half to create the banisters on both sides, and an old wooden fence post from her garden which she cut into four pieces.
She bolted it all down to make it strong, adding support beams under the flooring before stapling a large piece of carpet to the top floor.

To make the steps, Becky used a six-unit Kallax shelving unit she had bought from IKEA, stacking the compartments to create a staircase.
The dedicated mum spent 10 days building the makeshift loft space from start to finish, with the products setting her back just £250 – and she couldn’t be happier with the result.

Becky shared the results on Facebook, where her post garnered nearly 4,000 likes, with hundreds of people gushing over her handiwork in the comments section.
One person said: “This is actually amazing and done to such an ideal budget. Think I’m going to steal this idea for my youngest and my stepson – what my partner doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”
“Totally fantastic you should be so very proud,” another user agreed.
Someone else commented: “That is simply one word ‘outstanding’ – fabulous.”
“Great way to create a fun space for them, well done,” added another viewer.
One person even compared the look to that of a “showroom”, congratulating Becky on her efforts.
In a few words of advice for others who want to try out the hack, Becky added: “Just bite the bullet and go for it.
