People are sharing their best ‘air con’ hacks to keep cool in the heatwave and all you need is a bottle of water
WITH temperatures reaching highs of 30 in parts of the UK today, many of us will be ducking and diving into shops just to make the most of the air conditioning.
And for those of you dreading another sleepless night in the heat, fear not as there are plenty of ways to fake air conditioning in your own home - and it won’t cost you a penny.
From the frozen water bottle hack to sleeping downstairs - we reveal the simple, not to mention cheap, ways of keeping cool tonight.
FREEZE A WATER BOTTLE
No air con? No problem!
Create your own air conditioning system by placing two frozen bottles in front of your fan, this way you will be blowing very cold air directly around your room.
...AND YOUR HOT WATER BOTTLE!
One woman shared the sleep tip she swears by - filling up a hot water bottle and putting it in the freezer before bed.
Sharing her hack on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, the woman said: "If you're feeling the heat, fill a hot water bottle no more than 2/3 full of cold water and pop it in the freezer for a few hours.
"It stays cold for hours especially at night. Bliss!"
Unplug appliances you are not using
Appliances that have to be plugged in tend to generate a fair amount of heat, which will make a hot day even hotter.
Make sure you unplug items like toasters and chargers or items you have on standby during the day like TVs.
These will not only cool your house down, but they might also save you some money on your electricity bill too.
Rinse your wrists
Washing either your wrists or your feet with cold water before you hit the hay can help you to cool down and drift off.
The fastest way to cool down is by applying something cold to your pressure points - so putting a bag of frozen veg on your wrists for a few minutes could also be a good option.
Sleep downstairs
If it's possible, it's always better so sleep on the bottom floor during a heatwave.
This is because heat naturally rises, so it's likely to be a little cooler downstairs.
Switch your sheets
Opting for breathable fabrics like organic cotton or bamboo is a much better option during the heatwave.
This is because they absorb moisture more easily. They are more expensive, but can you put a price on a good night's sleep?
...AND PUT THEM ON ICE!
Throwing your bedding inside the fridge/freezer for ten minutes before bedtime brings some much-needed relief from the heat by setting the temperature low before you retire for the night.
Just make sure your bedding is wrapped up tightly in a plastic bag before you chill it. You could cool your pillowcases too.
