Princess Diana’s most iconic moments revealed – from shaking the hand of an Aids patient to dancing with John Travolta
DANCING with A-listers, charity work and giving birth to the future king – these were unforgettable moments in Princess Diana's life.
Here, we round up our top ten People's Princess moments.
Kidding around
ONE of Diana’s most iconic pictures – thanks to that see-through skirt – this was taken by Sun snapper Arthur Edwards back in September 1980.
It shows the shy 19-year-old, who was then working as a nursery assistant at the Young England Kindergarten in Pimlico, London.
Around that time in Charles and Diana’s courtship, we often saw Di captured by paparazzi as she made her way to work.
“I adore children,” she said, when asked why she’d gone into the job.
People’s princess
DIANA was instrumental in challenging the stigma around HIV and Aids.
Here, she shakes hands with an Aids patient on a visit to Hospital Universidade in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in April 1991 .
He lost that lovin’ feelin’
WHEN Charles and Diana got engaged in February 1981, to us it seemed like a real-life fairy tale. But in fact Charles was still infatuated with his ex, Camilla Parker Bowles.
When asked by a TV reporter if the newly engaged couple were in love, Diana replied: “Yes, of course we are.”
When Charles cryptically replied: “Whatever ‘in love’ means”, the whole world cringed.
Strictly ballroom
SHE was a life-long fan of dance, having taken ballet and tap lessons as a child, and aged 24, Diana got to show off her moves with none other than actor John Travolta at a White House dinner in November 1985.
That night she also danced with Clint Eastwood and Tom Selleck – we’re a little jealous, to say the least!
Flying solo
ON a trip to India in February 1992, Diana was pictured sitting alone outside the Taj Mahal.
The temple is said to be a symbol of love, and hearts broke for her. With her marriage to Charles on the rocks, the princess described her experience at the iconic site as: “Very healing”.
Wedded kiss
DIANA and Prince Charles married on July 29 1981, and their wedding was watched on TV by 750 million people worldwide.
The bride’s dress featured a stunning 25ft sequin-encrusted train, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.
When she stepped on to the Buckingham Palace balcony to receive a kiss on the hand from Charles, the crowds of well-wishers outside went wild.
Baby love
IN recent years, we’ve seen Kate and Wills posing outside the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital in London with their recent additions, but back in June 1982, it was Diana, Charles and baby William who were greeted by the paparazzi.
She may have looked calm and collected, but Diana later admitted that she had been in agony.
"When I left the hospital, I could barely put one foot in front of the other,” she said. “My stitches were killing me.”
Mummy’s boy
DIANA gave birth to Prince Harry in September 1984, and three months later he was christened Henry Charles Albert David by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the chapel at Windsor Castle.
He wore the traditional Honiton lace christening gown as Diana cooed over her beautiful boy. So cute!
A tall order
IN a bid to surprise her husband in December 1985, Di took to the stage with renowned dancer Wayne Sleep to perform a routine to hit Uptown Girl at the Royal Opera House.
Recalling the moment, Wayne joked: “I said to Princess Diana: ‘This will never work, ma’am. You’re so much taller than me.’”
Prince Charles was said to be annoyed about the dance because it went against royal etiquette.
Brave heart
DIANA was committed to campaigning against deadly land mines, and in January 1997 she travelled to Angola to work with the Halo Trust, a charity that aims to clear the devices.
