Mum turns ‘worst house on the street’ into modern pad with DIY & adds £153k to the value
A MUM purchased the "worst house on the street" and totally transformed it from a "derelict" building into a stunning modern home.
The DIY-loving mum added £153,000 to the value of the house and the results speak for themselves.
Hannah Janikiewicz, 41, from Wirral, purchased the four-bedroom Victorian home in 2013 for £347,000.
The mum-of-three, who works as a project manager, and her husband knocked through two bathrooms to make one much larger bathroom.
The pair also stripped the wallpaper from every room, sanded the floorboards, re-plastered the walls, and re-wired the house, all before redecorating the home to their personal taste.
They got the house up to a liveable standard by the time Hannah’s husband’s work required a move to Qatar.
The family – including their children Isabella, 9, Xabi, 7, and five-year-old Miller – rented the property out for the following five years, returning in 2018 for good.
It was the summer of 2020 before the family really had a chance to make the house a home.
They reconfigured the downstairs, knocked through the kitchen and dining room and removed five chimney breasts as part of the “massive” renovation project.
The family removed a double garage in the garden to give them a beautiful outdoor space.
In addition to a full redecoration, the house required some serious work to bring it up to scratch, including full re-wiring, new floors, new windows, and new plumbing.
Hannah said she really wanted a practical and beautiful family home.
She explained: “I wanted to create a large, bright, usable space for the family.”
It was also important to her to retain the original features in the house while still updating and modernising the building.
“We wanted to be really sympathetic with the original features and so had all the sash windows restored with double glazing”, she said.
