WIFE LIFE

1950’s Housewife Guide for Xmas goes viral as it warns women NEVER to moan & always have a drink ready for their man

A BONKERS guide from the 1950s revealing how women should treat their husbands has gone viral – after warning them to never moan and always have a stiff drink ready.

Women are no longer expected to be dutiful housewives who just cook, clean and looked after the kids, but it was a very different story in the 50s.

Housekeeping Monthly 1955 issue ran The Good Wife’s Guide, detailing how a woman should run a home and treat her husband – stating: “A good wife always knows her place.”

As well as making sure the house was spic and span for Christmas, women were expected to have a hearty fire going for then their husbands returned from work.

The guide said: “Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by.”

Women were advised to always ‘have dinner ready’ for when the man walked in through the door – including a festive feast.

The 1950s guide advised women to never complain – even if their husbands stayed out all night

The guide told wives: “Don’t complain if he’s late for dinner or if he stays out all night.

“Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.”

The guide gets more detailed, advising women to get a pillow for their husband when he walks in the door, and to take off his shoes.

Women should speak in a ‘soothing tone’, with the guide saying: “Let him talk first – remember his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by.

“Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you.

“Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity.

“He is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness.

“You have no right to question him.”

Even if you aren’t going out, you should always get yourself ready too, with the guide advising women take ‘15 minutes’ to rest, touch-up their make-up and be ‘fresh-looking’, while they also recommended popping a ribbon in your hair.

And women should also make sure the kids are presentable, washing their faces, hands and combing their hair if necessary, adding: “Try to encourage the children to be quiet.”

As well as themselves, women were expected to make the home look inviting too, which means clearing away clutter and children’s toys, books and schoolwork.
