Bride crushed after her daughter slams her ‘plain’ wedding gown on Say Yes To The Dress – and the groom’s there too
A BRIDE-to-be was crestfallen after her daughter branded her dream wedding dress ‘plain’, comparing it to a sheet.
Lisa is the latest bride to enlist the help of stylish Gok Wan, as she appeared on Say Yes to the Dress in Lancashire.
The fitting was an unusual one even for Gok, as Lisa turned up with her fiancé – Steve – causing confusion with the stylist.
When the pair first step in, Gok promptly asks him what his relationship to Lisa is, and after finding out he’s the husband-to-be tells him to leave.
He tells Steve: “You’re the groom!? What are you doing here, get out immediately!”
Steve acknowledges it’s odd for him to be there, saying: “Obviously it’s rare for a groom to be involved in anything like this.”
But the couple claim they’ve had their fill of bad luck, and want to pick the dress together.
Lisa says: “I can’t wait for my fiancé to choose my dress with me.
“We’ve been through a lot together and I really wanted him to share in this journey.
“I know they say it’s bad luck for the groom to see the wedding dress before the wedding, but I think we’ve had our run of bad luck so we’re just embracing everything and we want to do this together.”
The former PE teacher reveals she’s put on around three stone after being forced to retire due to health complications.
Lisa caught both bacterial and viral meningitis, with the pair saying they’re grateful for every day together.
The mum reveals she was in a life or death situation, saying: “They said ‘say goodbye to your children, you won’t be here tomorrow.
“The thought of leaving everybody just filled me with dread, but Steven was absolutely amazing. He took everything on and was my absolute rock.”
After making a miraculous recovery, Lisa was looking forward to walking down the aisle and brought her daughter, Maddy, and Steven’s daughter, Lucy, along to also help her pick out a dress.
But the weight gain has seen her lose confidence, as she tells Gok: “I put a lot of weight on because I had to retire from work.
“I found it very difficult from being active in an extremely active job to having to take it easy for my health.”
He first picks out a flowing, boho-style dress with a plunging neckline, which Lisa is unsure of.
As she steps out to face her family’s critique, it seems they’re also not convinced by the frock.
Maddy rips into it, saying: “I think it’s too plain for you.
“It basically looks like a white sheet.”
After the dress is brutally shot down, Gok goes back to the drawing board and selects a dress with a fuller skirt, helping balance Lisa’s curves.
As soon as she puts it on she lights up, saying: “I love it, I love how it looks off the hanger and I’m quite excited to actually put this one on.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would actually look this good! I do feel more like a bride in dress number two.”
But Maddy shoots it down again, saying: “It looks really pretty, but I don’t think it’s perfect.”
It’s third time lucky for Gok, who picks out an off-the-shoulder fitted gown, from Essence of Australia for £1,599.
Lisa also likes it, saying: “I look really good, the figure and everything is lovely! This could be the dress.”
She eagerly awaits Maddy’s opinion, and she finally gives her mum the green light.
Maddy says: “As soon as I saw her, I was like ‘she’s walking down the aisle in that, that’s her dress.”
