Bridesmaid blasts cousin for making her pay for £350 dress she didn’t even choose – so who should pay?
A bridesmaid has vented her anger online after being asked to pay for a £350 dress by her cousin – the bride.
Taking to popular forum mumsnet, the woman revealed she was not happy about being asked to pay for the pricey garment.
In the post, the woman explained how she and her sister had been asked to be bridesmaid for their relative’s big day and said they used to be “close” to her.
Despite having to pay for their own dresses, the women had no say in what they wore to the ceremony – and this particular bridesmaid asked fellow mumsnet users if they thought it was reasonable.
“Me and my sister have been asked to be bridesmaids to our cousin we used to be very close to,” she penned.
“We aren’t short of money but the dresses she has chosen for us to wear and asked us to pay for ourselves are £350 each.
“I wouldn’t say no and look cheap but if it was my wedding I’d never ask this of someone. Is she a cf?”
She then went on to ask users whether they would “just go with it” or whether they thought she was a “control freak”.
Fellow Mumsnet users were quick to reply, with one person writing: “They should pay either way but to chose such an expensive dress and then ask you to pay is absolutely disgraceful.”
A second person agreed: “Bridesmaids should NOT pay for the dresses ! Crass and vulgar to ask them to.”
A third user fumed: “If the couple is going to dictate which dress you will be wearing then they pay.
“If you get to choose your own then it would be more reasonable to ask you to pay as you can chose something you may wear again and within your own budget.”
A fourth added: “If she wants a lavish wedding, she should be able to afford it. This is ridiculous.”
However, not everyone saw it this way and some made their opinion known.
“I rather think it’s more traditional for bridesmaids to buy their dresses. We always have for the girls,” one said.
Another queried: “What way did she approach you about it? I had a friend who asked me to do this instead of a wedding present. I was happy to do this but she did pay for hair make up shoes bag etc.”
The debate comes after it was revealed one couple recently got married on a budget of £388 after their original plans were cancelled due to coronavirus.
