People are turning their back gardens into Greek-inspired holiday hideaways during lockdown

WITH holidays cancelled for the foreseeable future Brits are turning their back gardens into Mediterranean-inspired retreats instead.

Greece is one of the most popular holidays, and people have been using the sun-soaked destination as the basis for their garden makeovers.

Idyllic islands such as Santorini and Zante have been the inspiration for a number of projects, with Chris Ryan, from Wigan, transforming his yard into a slice of Grecian paradise.

Chris completed his garden makeover while working from home, as he needed a project to ‘keep his sanity’.

He used classic Greek colours of blue and white to give it a holiday feel, using Cuprinol in shade Blue Ivy and white masonry paint, and used a £6.99 rug from Lidl to add a homely touch.

Chris sourced most of the accessories from B&M, including some lights which he added onto a trellis, and added dream-catchers, hanging ornaments and pots.

He said: “Used lockdown to transform my garden.

“I bought most of the things from shops such as B&M and the range and orders off the internet and a little imagination

“I’ve been working from home and done this in my spare time to keep me sane.

“I, like many others understand holidays probably won't happen this year so I decided to bring holidays to my what was a boring backyard.

“If I can’t go on holiday I’ll bring holidays to me.

“It’s helped me having a project to do in my spare time and having a nice area to sit and relax in.”

Chris said people reckoned he’d “brought Santorini to the UK” with his makeover, and he’s chuffed to bits with it.

He added he popped some soothing wave sounds on and for a minute he was “transported” to Greek shores.

Elsewhere in the UK Carol Pink, from Nottingham, also took inspiration from Greece for her back garden.

She went for a classic blue and white theme as well when updating the seating area at the end of her garden, which was “dull and unused”.

Carol told : “The future looked dull without our holiday to look forward to.

"The Greek island Zante is our favourite place that we look forward to visiting at the end of summer."

She also used white masonry paint and a blue shade from Aldi, called Forget Me Not, and grabbed a window mirror from B&M for £20 to complete the look.

Carol added the finishing touches of a blue rug, £61, and blue and white cushions, £7, both from Amazon.

She now relaxes in her Grecian getaway with a cocktail, listening to Zorba music.

Meanwhile this mum turned her ‘prison yard’ back garden into a bright and welcoming space for a few quid thanks to B&M buys.
