Desperate mum resorts to making her own toilet roll during coronavirus madness and saves a fortune
A CLEVER mum was forced to make her own toilet paper after she attempted to get her hands on some four times - only to be met with empty supermarket shelves and no chance of picking up some rolls for her family.
In a desperate bid to provide her household with a solution for toilet paper, the Australian mum decided to pop into her local hardware store where she picked up a pack of 20 microfiber cloths for less than 6 pounds - which, in the long run, would save her a fortune.
In hope her idea would encourage others to do the same, the mum took to Facebook where she detailed her method and solution to not having an ample supply of toilet paper.
She explained that with just one pack of the microfiber cloths she was able to create 80 pieces that could be washed and re-used time and time again.
Ensuring the idea is practical, the woman said: "After use, they go straight into a bucket of bleach with a lid on it, which sits beside the toilet."
She continued to explain that when the bucket is filled with the used microfibre cloths, she pops them all into the washing machine in a separate load with some Napisan to make them clean again.
To make the cloths, she simply cut each cloth into quarters and "over-locked the raw edges", so she was able to turn the 20 cloths onto 80 - which worked out to cost roughly 8p per piece.
She also picked up a small plastic tub from the hardware store to keep the cloths in which set her back an extra couple of pounds, but anything can be used the store the toilet paper alternative.
While the mum acknowledged that her current toilet paper situation is far from ideal, she said it has its perks as it's environmentally friendly, reusable and reduces flushing - meaning they can also save on water.
She said: "Our household alone saves about 25 flushes per day, so I can justify a small load to wash every couple of days"
The mum added that originally she thought about using old towels, but decided on microfibre as it's "softer for the feminine bits and dries quicker when washed".
The desperate mum urged others to take on the idea in hope that it would reduce the need for toilet paper and solve the supermarket chaos currently sweeping the globe as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.
She said: "If we could all do this, it would reduce the need for toilet paper, save us all money in the long run and be better for the environment."
The woman's post attracted a huge response, with many people applauding her for her clever idea and creativity during these difficult times.
One person said: "About time someone got this situation in perspective and highlighted that there are lots of alternatives at our fingertips. Good work"
While another wrote: "Took us two weeks to find a 12 roll pack... I will probably be doing this next pay to stretch the rolls out. Sad what we have to resort to but will be good in the long run for the environment."
Many people even compared the idea to using cloth nappies for babies - a method commonly used among parents.
