The former First Lady was speaking at the O2 in London at the launch of her memoir, Becoming, in April last year when she shared the anecdote.

She recalled the state banquet that she and Barack Obama had attended alongside Her Majesty during their visit to the UK back in 2011.

Speaking to host Stephen Colbert, she said: “She had on a beautiful… I’m sure it was covered in diamonds and a crown. You sort of look and go ‘all of that is real.’

“In the gloriousness of that outfit that she had on, she put on the little bitty pin we have her.

“And I gasped and said ‘you wore the pin’ and she just said ‘mmhmm yes.’

“That was my experience, that has been my experience, that kind of warmth and graciousness, intelligence, wit – I like her.”

The couple had gifted her a moss agate floral brooch, which she was next seen wearing during Trump’s visit to the UK in 2018, leading many to believe she was “trolling” the US President.

Michelle, 56, has previously spoken about how the monarch "put her at ease."

She said: "I had all this protocol buzzing in my head and I was like 'don't trip down the stairs and don't touch anybody, whatever you do'.
