Mum reveals she baths her three-year-old in Dettol and completely divides opinion

A MUM has split opinion after admitting she bathes her three-year-old daughter in Dettol.

Taking to the anonymous woman said she regularly takes a bath in the disinfectant as she “loves the smell” and has now introduced her daughter to them.

She wrote: “My partner thought I was weird when I said I loved Dettol baths! He's never heard of it or had one! Anyone else?

“I am now giving my 3-year-old her first Dettol bath and soon I will be. Can't wait! Lol love the smell!”

Many were quick to agree with the mum, admitting that they had been pouring the cleaning product into their tubs for years.

Commenting on the thread, one wrote: “You're not the only one lol, I loooove them! Smell so clean and hygienic!”

While another added: “I haven't for ages but I especially did when I was pregnant. I love the smell of it. Should have put Dettol in my bath now.”

A third wrote: “I do this with my youngest son and he loves the smell of his special baths.”

Meanwhile others were quick to criticise the mum, expressing their concerns about bathing in the cleaning product.

One wrote: “Dettol in the bath, goodness no wonder there are now so many allergies around when people think they need to bathe in disinfectant. Yuck.”

Another agreed adding: “I thought this was a step too far…children are meant to get dirty to build up their immune system.”

When you shouldn't bathe in Dettol

If you have eczema, a skin condition or are allergic to any of the ingredients.

On children under 1 year of age.

If you are pregnant or on the skin of your breast if you breastfeed unless supervised by your doctor.

Near your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or bodily orifices.

Undiluted on your skin as severe irritation may occur.

“Dettol baths are a terrible idea! We have bacteria on our bodies for a reason!” added a third.

But despite the fellow parents’ concerns says that it is perfectly safe to bathe in the disinfectant as long as it is diluted.

Dr Louw, pathologist at the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) is quoted on the brand’s website encouraging its use when washing.

She said: “Using a Disinfectant Liquid as part of your daily hygiene routine is important.

“When skin is clean and moisturised, it improves overall hygiene”.

The brand added: “Dettol Disinfectant Liquid has added Aloe Vera, which is gentle on skin and kills 100 illness causing germs when diluted in bath water.”
