Why Meghan Markle can’t stick to anything for more than two years – from her first husband and pals to being a Royal
JUST how long is the Duchess of Sussex’s attention span? She has been an actress, a wife, a vocal feminist, and now a royal – yet Meghan doesn’t seem to stick at anything for more than a couple of years.
Already bored with royal life and England, she and Prince Harry have decided to quit as “senior royals” to take up a new life doing – well, we don’t know what – in North America. Here, we take a look at everything Meghan has dabbled in . . . and how she’s suffered from the Two Year Itch.
Relationships
Husband No1
THE divorcee only managed 23 months of marriage to her first husband, producer Trevor Engelson. They got hitched in September 2011 and divorced in August 2013.
Celeb chef boyfriend
Afterwards she dated celebrity chef Cory Vitiello for almost two years, starting in summer 2014 and ending in May 2016.
Meets Harry
In June 2016 she started secretly seeing Prince Harry, managing just four months of undercover courtship before telling the world via Harry’s statement on October 30 about their privacy.
Husband No2
Not content with being a royal girlfriend, in May 2018 she upgraded to being a wife just under two years after she and Harry got together.
And just less than a year later, their life changed again with the arrival of baby Archie on May 6, 2019.
Changes ring
Meghan even got bored of her engagement ring, despite it being designed by Harry himself, featuring diamonds from Botswana, southern Africa, where their love blossomed, and Princess Diana’s collection.
She first showed the sparkler to the public in November 2017. But in June 2019, eagle-eyed fans noticed Meghan had replaced the original gold band with a delicate diamond-studded one.
Harry had even commented on the ring featuring yellow gold, as, “that’s Meghan’s favourite”. But less than two years later she had a change of heart.
Family
Becomes a royal
MEGHAN started being an active part of the Royal Family on December 1, 2017, at her first official public engagement with Prince Harry. Now, just slightly more than two years later – despite her initial enthusiasm about being keen to get “boots on the ground” – she is fed up of public duty and wants to withdraw.
'Fab four' charity
Her interest in the Fab Four’s Royal Foundation quickly waned too. They appeared together at the first annual forum in February 2018, and she was the fourth patron alongside Harry, William and Kate.
But she didn’t even manage a year. In June 2019 it was announced the Sussexes were leaving to form their own foundation.
Friends
Twitter pal Piers
PALS have spoken of being “ghosted” by the former actress, including most famously Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, who had struck up a friendship with Meghan over social media and eventually met her in person during Wimbledon in 2016.
They had a drink in a pub the very night she was set up on a blind date with Prince Harry – and Piers never heard from her again.
He ripped into her on Thursday, tweeting: “People say I’m too critical of Meghan Markle – but she ditched her family, ditched her Dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William & now has split him from the Royal Family. I rest my case.”
Agent Gina
Meghan’s former agent, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, started working with her in mid 2015, but says she was dropped in October 2017, shortly before she and Harry announced their engagement. Another two-year itch.
Pal Millie
Made In Chelsea toff Millie Mackintosh met Meghan in the summer of 2016 and they were pictured on a cycle ride at celeb haunt Soho Farmhouse in September 2017.
But despite attending Meghan’s hen do, and friends suggesting in February 2018 that Millie could even be part of the bridal party, the Quality Street heiress was snubbed from the wedding in May that year. She was unceremoniously dumped two years after they met.
Pal Lizzie
Presenter Lizzie Cundy has told how Meghan stopped answering her texts after she met Harry. The pair were pals in 2013 after meeting at a charity gala, often emailing and texting according to Lizzie.
It came to a sudden stop after Lizzie enquired about news she was dating Harry in 2016. She said: “I was literally ghosted by her.”
1st family meet
Even within the royals, she hasn’t kept up friendships. In her engagement interview in November 2017 Meghan gushed about how “amazing” the Duchess of Cambridge had been in welcoming her to The Firm – yet Kate didn’t meet her new nephew until Archie was a week old in May 2019.
Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis didn’t meet their cousin for two months – and when they did it was at a public polo match on July 10. With reports of Harry and Wills’ rift, it seems Meghan sided with her husband and even distanced herself from the Cambridges.
Charity
Rwanda splurge
THE Duchess was pictured in 2016 doing charity work in Rwanda for World Vision, but on its website it says she was only an ambassador from 2016 to 2017.
UN feminism pledge
She made her big speech as a UN goodwill ambassador in March 2015 – in which her soundbite was: “I am proud to be a woman and a feminist.”
But that pride soon waned and it doesn’t look like she has done anything publicly for the organisation since.
Homes
Cottage at Kensington
MEGHAN moved into Nottingham Cottage, Kensington Palace in London, in February 2017.
Not satisfied with the cosy apartment where she and Harry shared their courtship and he proposed while they cooked roast chicken, Meghan yearned for the countryside and more space.

So, in April 2019 – just over two years later and right before Archie’s birth – they moved into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, Berks.
Now, of course, she wants a home in Canada, having got bored within nine months.
