You fans are having a HUGE debate over whether it’s right to fancy serial killer Joe
FANS of Netflix’s chilling series You can’t decide whether it’s acceptable to fancy the main character – as he’s a serial killer.
The hit show is back for its second season, and once again Joe, played by Penn Badgley, is breaking hearts everywhere - literally.
Without giving too much away in case you haven’t seen the first series, Joe is a massive serial killer who murders at least four people over the course of the first 10 episodes.
A year after You first hit out screens, stalker Joe is now living as Will in LA, after managing to escape justice.
Fans are already hooked on season two, which premiered yesterday, but Joe’s good looks are dividing opinion online.
People are strangely attracted to Joe’s charm and intelligence, despite him bashing a woman over the head with a rock, locking a man in a basement and generally being a creepy guy.
Debate has ignited online over whether it’s acceptable to lust after a serial killer, with people admitting Joe is “hot but creepy”. Understatement.
Commenting online, one person said: “’You’ is back on Netflix. I love it but it's frustrating because @PennBadgley is so hot you forget that Joe is a total psychopath.”
Someone else said: “I won’t forget that some of you weirdos actually thought Joe from you was hot. I won’t forget it.”
A third added: “When I’m watching You on Netflix it’s hard
to completely vilify Joe because honestly penn badgley is like way too f****** hot.”
This person asked: “Is it weird I find Joe from You quite hot in this.”
Another admitted: “Started watching You and I don’t want to but I find joe real hot sigh.”
This person agreed, commenting: “On my 3rd episode of You, and I still find Joe creepy and crazy.”
Another said: “NETFLIX's YOU is sooooo creepy yet so hot!
“Daaaayum Joe and Beck and.... PEACH.”
Somebody else simply wrote: “Joe from you is actually so hot.”
And this person added: “Just started the #You series on Netflix this morning. I know I’m way behind on the trend but can I just say...OH MY LANTA.
“I can’t even with @PennBadgley as Joe. He makes my head hurt. So hot but so unbelievably creepy.
“LOVE IT already!”
But this person said: “I still don’t understand those people who found him ‘hot’ in the series. Like srsly, ppl?”
Penn, who starred in Gossip Girl, says Joe is meant to elicit a “conflicted reaction”.
Speaking on The Today Show last year, he said: “The whole point is he's meant to garner a conflicted reaction.
“I don't see him as a portrayal of a real person, I see him as a representation of the part of us that identifies with him.
“The part of us that is a troll; that part of us that is victim blaming; the part of us that is privileged and blind.
“We're meant to identify with him."
But Penn is not the first actor to be seen as attractive whilst portraying a killer.
Zac Efron was accused of ‘romanticising’ notorious serial killer Ted Bundy in the film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.
People had conflicting opinions over being attracted to the Baywatch heartthrob as he played a serial killer.
But there may an explanation as to why scores of people are attracted to criminals, including serial kills.
Katherine Ramsland, PhD, a professor of forensic psychology at DeSales University, claimed it could be ‘hybristophilia’.
She told it’s when a person: “Gets sexually aroused over someone else committing an offensive or violent act.”
