Woman claims regular MISTLETOE injections kept her breast cancer at bay
A WOMAN says regular mistletoe injections have helped keep her breast cancer at bay.
Ali Bayliss, 51, has the jabs twice weekly.
She pays £297 a year and sources the festive plant’s extract from Germany.
Ali said: “People are shocked that I use it to treat my cancer — to most it’s just something to kiss under at Christmas.
“Doctors thought we were mad. They couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t get chemo they offered.”
But Ali, from Shropshire, also suffers multiple sclerosis. And when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 she avoided chemo, fearing the gruelling impact it might have on her body.
Following a successful operation to remove the affected breast Ali and husband Mike, 62, chose their own treatment — funded by his inheritance.
Ali has a fear of needles so ex-gas board engineer Mike learned how to inject her in each thigh.
Ali added: “Mike is amazing. He will spend hundreds of hours researching ways to keep me healthy. I firmly believe I’d be dead without him.”
Since she started the jabs in March 2015 her health has stabilised.
And while the NHS don’t advise the treatment, the couple swear by its ability to boost the immune system.
Ali added: “I’ve since found out the plant has been used for hundreds of years to treat epilepsy, hypertension, menopausal symptoms, infertility and rheumatism.
"Mistletoe has worked wonders for my life. And I tell anyone I can, it really isn’t just for Christmas!”
Symptoms of breast cancer
FOR most women, the first sign or symptom of breast cancer is a lump or area of thickened tissue in their breast.
While 90 per cent of such lumps are not cancerous, it is vital to get them checked by your GP at the earliest opportunity – detecting the disease early can mean treatment is more effective.
It is therefore vitally important to be "breast aware" - know what feels normal for you, and therefore what changes to look out for.
However, while the majority of women know to feel for unusual lumps and bumps, there are also other, less understood signs and symptoms.
- Change in breast size or shape
- Redness or a rash
- Nipple discharge
- Swelling in the armpit or around the collarbone
- Changes in skin texture
- An inverted nipple
- Constant pain
