Charles and Diana’s wedding day balcony kiss is Brits’ favourite as poll reveals our most memorable smooches

PRINCE Charles and Diana’s balcony kiss on their wedding day has been named the most memorable of all time.

Researchers polled the nation to discover the kisses which have stuck in their minds with the 1981 royal wedding kiss at Buckingham Palace topping the list (25 per cent).

They were followed by a more animated lip lock, with a quarter of people choosing Lady and The Tramp’s spaghetti kiss (24 per cent) from the 1955 Disney movie of the same name.

Prince William and the then Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding day kiss came in joint second with 24 per cent.

The historic picture of a US Navy sailor and a young woman locked in a passionate embrace in Times Square, New York on VJ day in 1945 picked up 20 per cent.

While the most recent royal post-wedding kiss Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle in 2018, was voted for by 15 per cent.

Madonna and Britney Spears' snog on the MTV Music Video Awards in 2003 came in seventh with 13 per cent – just behind the upside down kiss between Spider-Man and Mary Jane – played by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.

The smooch which woke Sleeping Beauty, EastEnders characters Colin and Barry's kiss in 1989 - the first homosexual kiss on TV - and Dawn French’s comic relief snog with Hugh Grant also made the list.

The survey was commissioned by TV channel HISTORY to launch their new landmark factual series Photos That Changed the World, which features an episode on Charles and Diana’s wedding kiss on Monday 21st October at 10pm.

The research also found that Brits love kissing - though surprisingly one in five people cannot remember who their first kiss was with.

However, it seemed that everyone has a special romantic kiss that sticks in their memory, with 25 per cent saying it was with the love of their life, 25 per cent saying it was with their current partner and 12 per cent confessing it was with their ex.

A spokesperson for TV channel HISTORY, which commissioned the study said: “The photo of Charles and Diana is iconic but it wasn’t even planned, as they had forgotten to kiss at the end of the ceremony.

“Of course, the kiss is imbued with poignancy when we look back on it now, as we know the tragic fate that awaited the People’s Princess.”

Four in ten people claim that kissing is one of the most intimate acts you can perform, while 36 percent agree that couples who still kiss are more likely to stay together.

Nearly a quarter (23 per cent) believe that a kiss is the perfect way to end a date, while 22 per cent reckon that kissing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

When it comes to the most memorable kisses, they provoked a wide variety of reactions - 30 per cent thought that Charles and Diana’s marriage would last forever, however six percent only gave it a couple of months.

A massive 96 per cent of people believe that Wills and Kate’s marriage will last longer than Charles and Diana while four out of five people believe that Harry and Meghan will outlast his parents’ relationship.
