‘King of Ginge’ Ed Sheeran jokes to Prince Harry that nobody understands what it’s like for ‘people like us’ in brilliant video for World Mental Health Day
“KING of Ginge” Ed Sheeran has bonded with Prince Harry over their red hair in a jokey new video for World Mental Health Day.
The Shape of You singer shared the clip on his Instagram account this morning that sees the pair of them meeting at Ivy Cottage in Kensington Palace to discuss the project.
But in the hilarious spoof video, Ed can be seen mistakenly believing that he and the Duke of Sussex are meeting to discuss their red hair.
Speaking to Harry, the star says: “I’ve actually been trying to write a song about this, to get it out to more people.”
Harry responds: “Someone with your skill set, to be able to write lyrics of a song, to raise awareness would be amazing.”
It quickly becomes clear that Ed has got the wrong end of the stick.
He continues: “That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.
“People don’t understand what it’s like for people like us, the jokes and snide comments, I just feel like it’s time we stood up and said we’re not going to take this anymore. We are ginger and we’re going to fight.”
Playing along Harry then says: “This is a bit awkward – there might have been a miscommunication but this is about World Mental Health Day.”
A then, apparently crestfallen, Ed can be seen deleting “GINGERS UNITE” from his laptop screen.
Harry is then addressing the camera saying: “Guys, this World Mental Health Day reach out, make sure your friends, strangers, look out for anybody that might be suffering in silence together.”
Ed was also keen to get the real message across on social media.
Captioning the video on Instagram he wrote: “It’s World Mental Health Day!
“Myself and Prince Harry, want to ensure that not just today but every day, you look after yourself, your friends and those around you.
“There’s no need to suffer in silence – share how you’re feeling, ask how someone is doing and listen for the answer, be willing to ask for help when you need it, and know that we are all in this together.”
The pair shared a teaser clip of their project on the Sussex royal account on Wednesday.
In the clip, Ed arrives at Ivy Cottage, where Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank live, and presses the doorbell.
To the delight of many fans, a God Save the Queen tune plays, before the Duke of Sussex opens the door to greet him, saying “it’s like looking in the mirror”.
Ed then asks Harry if he minds if the camera is brought in.
Harry replies “Not at all” and the pair then head inside together.
The royal is a passionate advocate for speaking about mental health, and earlier this week starred in an NHS campaign and advert alongside Prince William, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
In the advert, the Cambridges and Sussexes tell viewers how to beat bad sleep, stress and low mood in the advert.
YOU'RE NOT ALONE
EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost – to suicide.
It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.
It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes. And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.
Yet, it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.
That is why The Sun has launched the You’re Not Alone campaign. To remind anyone facing a tough time, grappling with mental illness or feeling like there’s nowhere left to turn, that there is hope.
To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, over the course of this week, we will tell you the stories of brave survivors, relatives left behind, heroic Good Samaritans – and share tips from mental health experts.
The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.
Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others. You’re Not Alone
The three-minute video — believed to be the first time senior royals have appeared in an advert — directs viewers to the Every Mind Matters website for tips on coping with life’s ups and downs.
