Best man and maid of honour end up MARRIED after priest makes colossal blunder and lists the bride and groom as witnesses
A WOMAN has taken to Reddit to claim her brother - who was best man at a wedding - ended up being MARRIED to the bride's maid of honour after the priest made a mistake with the marriage register.
Taking to to explain the situation, the woman revealed that to make matters worse, the best man had only just proposed to his girlfriend the day before.
"So how's this for a 'this can't happen' story," the woman wrote.
"My brother was the best man for a wedding and was the witness so signed the register.
"However, the priest f***ed up and listed my brother and the maid of honour as the bride and groom and the actual bride and groom as the witnesses.
"Now, no word of a lie, my brother is married to the maid of honour and we are trying to get it sorted out.
"On top of this he only just proposed to his girlfriend yesterday.
"Too good not to share."
And while other Reddit users found it hilarious, some questioned how genuine the story really was.
In the UK, it's standard practice to sign the register in the church, with most couples having two witnesses.
And as Reddit users pointed out, if this was the case, it's likely the marriage would be easily annulled.
One wrote: "There literally no way this happened.
"If in some bizarre timeline it did, it would be grounds for an immediate annulment and would not be a problem in the slightest."
While another wrote: "They should really be reading anything that they sign, especially contracts.
"That would be easy to spot plus the signature would be wrong."
Others were not convinced, however, with one claiming "nobody reads what they sign at the ceremony".
"It's awkward to go up to the front of the ceremony and look at a document that you've never seen before to ensure that you're signing something valid," another wrote.
"That said, I had no issues ensuring that where I was signing merely said 'witness' on it without taking an awkwardly long time. Not sure how these people failed that."
While it's not confirmed whether the story is genuine or not, it seems the marriage could be easily annulled.
According to , you can annul a marriage for a number of reasons, including if you did not properly consent.
