Princess Beatrice’s engagement ring ‘was inspired by the Queen’s own design’, claims jewellery expert

PRINCESS Beatrice's engagement ring "was inspired by The Queen's own design", a jewellery expert has claimed.

Yesterday the ninth-in-line to the throne announced her engagement to multi-millionaire property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi after a whirlwind 11-month romance.

Princess Beatrice's diamond sparkler was the handiwork of ring designer Shaun Leane of Mayfair who said they were “honoured” to have created the piece.

But with its round-cut jewel flanked by four panels of diamonds, Beatrice's stunning platinum ring - estimated to be worth up to £300,000 - is incredibly similar to her grandmother's.

Creative Director of jewellers Taylor & Hart told that Beatrice's engagement ring was inspired by The Queen's own design.

He said: "Like her grandmother, her aunt and cousin-in-law, Princess Beatrice has gone with an all-diamond engagement ring."

Taking note of the central round stone, the expert added: "Princess Beatrice's is a beautiful engagement wing with a round brilliant cut diamond flanked by four baguette-cut diamonds.

"It is breath-taking particularly because all you can see is diamonds and the platinum band is hidden."

In comparison, The Queen's engagement ring - which estimates is worth £105,000 - is another striking Art Deco design which is flanked by diamond panels.

Both rings also feature a three carat diamond in the centre of the design - however, Beatrice's ring has been estimated to be worth almost three times as much.

Ahead of their engagement in 1947, Prince Philip collaborated with jewellers Philip Antrobus Ltd to create an ring using diamonds from his mother Princess Alice of Battenburg's diamond-and-aquamarine tiara which she had been given as a wedding present.

Similarly to how Prince Harry designed Meghan Markle's engagement, Shaun Leane told that Edoardo had also sourced the baguette-cut diamonds from Botswana.

The designer told the publication: "He came to see me about four months ago, in secret, and he had a clear idea of what he wanted."

In his efforts to create a ring which "represented both of them", the designer added: "[Beatrice] likes a Victorian aesthetic whereas he likes Art Deco so I fused the two eras to create a ring with a Victorian silhouette and tapered baguette-cut side stones to create a linear, Art Deco effect."

In a statement from the couple, Beatrice gushed she "can't wait" to get married next year after her 36-year-old boyfriend popped the question in Italy earlier this month.
