Mum point blank called me a cash thief – she doesn’t realise it hurts

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVEN’T slept for three weeks since my mother accused me of stealing her cash.
I feel so desperately hurt that she could think that of me.
I’m a 42-year-old man. I’ve never got married and I’ve always been there for my mum. She is 68 and used to be lovely.
I’ve helped her out all I can since our dad passed away.
My brother and I have a key to her flat. She said she had £500 in her drawer, and now it’s gone.
There was no sign of forced entry, she says, so therefore it must have been me or my brother.
I know it was neither of us but she seems to have decided it was me.
Now when I see her she’s angry and cold. When I call on the phone she has nothing to say.
I’ve told her how saddened I am, but she says she’s not bothered as one of her children has taken her cash.

If you haven’t already, do help her tell the police about the missing money.

This may convince her you’ve nothing to hide.
Suggest she sees her doctor for a check-up in case there’s a medical cause for your mum’s confusion and changed mood.
If she is resistant to the idea, at least tell her GP about your worries.
