My step-daughter has put me in an awkward position with my husband
DEAR DEIDRE: MY stepdaughter put me in a really awkward position with my husband.
She’s 33 and married. I’m 53 and my husband is 56.
My stepdaughter and I went to my niece’s hen weekend. My niece knows my stepdaughter really well as they work together. We shared a room.
Our night out in Blackpool was great until we went up to bed. My stepdaughter said she was going out for one last cigarette but she didn’t come back to the hotel until seven in the morning.
I hardly slept a wink with worry. I sent her a text but heard nothing.
When she returned she said she’d been talking to a guy she met earlier. I think it went further than talking.
When I got home I felt irritable and sleep-deprived and my husband noticed. He knows there’s something wrong and I feel I’m not being honest with him.
Should I tell him what happened, or even tell my stepdaughter’s husband?

DEIDRE SAYS: No. The moment has passed. If he asks again, you can say that you didn’t sleep well, which isn’t unusual when you’re away from home.
Rather than opening a huge can of worms, talk to your stepdaughter next time you’re alone together. Explain how worried you were. She may be able to reassure you.
You can also explain that her actions meant you hardly slept and it would have appreciated a message at the least from her letting you know her whereabouts.
Telling her husband that she’s cheated would be wrong when you don’t know that she did.
