DEIDRE SAYS: COOPER wants to control and isolate you, which can feel like a compliment at the start of a relationship.

Often the abuser presents their issues as wanting to protect the other, or loving them so much they want to spend all their time together.

In reality, this is a very unhealthy pattern of behaviour and at its worst is a form of domestic abuse called coercive control.

So far you have exerted your independence, but often coercive control survivors begin to feel increasingly overwhelmed with these demands.

Check out The Freedom Programme (freedomprogramme.co.uk) which primarily supports women, but also runs a course for men who are wanting to stop their abusive behaviour.
