DEIDRE SAYS: PEOPLE with autism often benefit from clear and reliable planning – so throwing a last-minute change into the mix is an upsetting and unsettling development.

Many autistic people, females in particular, are adept at “masking”, which in itself can lead to huge anxiety and depression. Masking is where the person tries hard to appear as if they don’t have autism.

So Amelia may have been trying to seem neuro-typical, but you should still have taken her diagnosis into consideration and made sure she was comfortable.

It would help to have a good understanding of autism and what an autistic partner may need.

The National Autistic Society has a really good guide which explains more in detail. Go to autism.org.uk for more information.
