Is HRT making my girlfriend sick?

DEAR DEIDRE: A woman I’ve been seeing has been feeling very sick since starting hormone-replacement therapy.

Now, out of the blue, she texted to say she needed some space as things were getting on top of her. I’m worried that it’s over.

I am 57 and she is 55.

We have been together for two months and were getting on well, but then last week, she sent me the message saying she needed “me time”.

She didn’t specify we were over, so I have been keeping my hopes up that everything will be OK soon.

We still text each other at the start and end of each day to say good morning and goodnight. I have told her I am waiting until she is ready to talk. She sends messages with heart emojis.

I am scared that it’s over, but she has said nothing like that yet. In the last few days I have not slept or eaten much. I don’t know what to do.

DEIDRE SAYS: Like any medicine, the hormones used in HRT can cause side-effects which usually improve over time.

There are different sorts of HRT and it can take time to find the right dose and type that works for her.

Try to give her the time she needs. Make sure she knows you love her and are there for her.

If things don’t work out, you will have to accept it and move on. My support pack Mend Your Broken Heart will help just in case.
