Since coming off of her anxiety meds, my daughter has been all over the place

DEAR DEIDRE: Since coming off prescription drugs for anxiety, my daughter has been in a terrible state.

She wasn’t depressed before but now she feels hopeless and physically ill, and I’m very worried about her.

I’m 50 and my only daughter is 23. She lives at home with me after dropping out of university.

She suffered from anxiety and panic attacks while at university, so the GP put her on medication.

Unfortunately, she had bad side effects and started becoming very withdrawn and depressed.

I took her back to the doctor, who said to stop taking them immediately, rather than gradually, as she hadn’t been on them long enough to cause withdrawal symptoms.

But that was absolutely not the case.

After she stopped, she started to feel worse - not just down and weepy, but also in physical pain, nauseous and spaced out.

She cries every day and I don’t know how to help her and I’ve lost faith in the GP,

I’m terrified she’ll do something stupid.

DEIDRE SAYS: Seeing someone you love in such physical and mental pain and feeling unable to help is horrible.

Your daughter is entitled to see another GP, so please do make an appointment for her.

My support pack on Anxiety may be helpful. You can also contact mental health charity Mind () for support.

Counselling might also be beneficial for her, so ask about this.
