I’m worried about having sex with my wife since she’s had her pacemaker fitted
DEAR DEIDRE: EVER since my wife had a pacemaker fitted we’ve been too wary to have sex.
We’re both desperate to be intimate again, but the last thing we want to do is cause her further health issues.
I’m 63, she’s 60 and we’ve been married for 35 years.
After experiencing many issues with her heart over the years my wife had a pacemaker implanted just over three weeks ago.
While the doctor initially told us she had to avoid driving or heavy lifting for the first few weeks, we never received any other guidance when it came to sex.
After taking some time off work and resting she’s feeling almost completely recovered, but we have both been feeling apprehensive.
What if we try and end up damaging the device or causing her more problems? When will we be in the clear?
Please help.

DEIDRE SAYS: There’s no reason why you both can’t continue to have a good sex life after having a pacemaker fitted.
NHS guidelines say you can resume most activities after three to four weeks.
If you’re worried, avoid positions that place pressure on the arms and chest for a while and contact your doctor for further advice.
The most important factor is that your wife feels recovered.
If you’re still concerned, build up to intimacy slowly.
