I thought my manager had my back until the director spoke to me
DEAR DEIDRE: I thought my manager had my back but she’s told our managing director and me that I’d fit in better in a different department.
I feel so stressed about it. There are only three of us who work together.
I’m a woman of 25, my manager is 31 and we have another friend and colleague, a woman of 28.
We’d all have lunch together and we even go out sometimes at weekends.
We’ve recently been told there’s going to be a shake-up of departments.
The MD called me into his office and suggested that I move sideways to another team.
When I asked why, he said my manager had suggested it. I asked her and she said that some training I’d organised would fit better with the other department.
But it’s just a small part of my job. Does she simply want to get rid of me?

DEIDRE SAYS: She could be, but alternatively, there may be changes and redundancies coming that you aren’t aware of and perhaps she is trying to protect you.
If you do wish to stay put, then you have to make your case. Be proactive and write everything down and ask to see the managing director so that you can explain why it would be better for you not to have the upheaval.
