I’m embarrassed by my partner because of his rotting teeth
DEAR DEIDRE: I’m seriously considering ending the relationship with my boyfriend because he’s got a front tooth missing.
It’s not only that – it’s his complete lack of pride in his physical appearance. He doesn’t look after himself at all.
We met online five years ago. I’m 59, he’s 58.
I told him from the outset that I wouldn’t be asking him to move in with me as I am fiercely independent.
We’ve had a few holidays together and I realised that he can go days without brushing his teeth.
He’d been complaining about a toothache and this particular tooth in the front was rotten and had to be removed. He said he was going to get an implant.
Now he’s said he’s not going to bother. I’m embarrassed when I introduce him and he smiles.
Apart from this, he’s a good-looking guy but his teeth are bad, his breath smells stale and he wears the same clothes day after day.

He may just have a fear of the dentist, in which case help him to find another if his usual one is unsympathetic.
Explain to him that not brushing his teeth can lead to other health issues, not just oral health problems.
