I’m very worried for my granddaughter after I noticed fresh cuts on her arm
DEAR DEIDRE: DURING my granddaughter’s visit last weekend, I noticed fresh cuts on her arm.
It’s clear she’s self-harming, and I’m very worried about her.
She’s 15 and has always been an anxious child. I’m her 72-year-old grandad.
Her parents care about her, but they both have demanding jobs and little time.
She’s an only child and has been bullied in the past.
When she came over with her parents last Sunday, she was wearing long sleeves, even though it was warm.
You can also send a private message on the Facebook page.
At one point, she pushed her sleeve up and I saw the angry, red cuts and scars.
I am scared she could hurt herself badly.
I’m also concerned about her mental health. We’ve always been close and I really want to help her but have no idea where to start.
DEIDRE SAYS: People self-harm as a way of dealing with emotional pain or traumatic experiences. It helps them feel relief or a sense of control.
Suggest your granddaughter look at the website, too, as it has lots of information for young people.
