HOSPITAL HELL

Breast cancer treatment was a nightmare – my surgeon was rude and nurses didn’t seem to care

DEAR DEIDRE: I FELT like a number on a conveyor belt when I spent time in hospital being treated for breast cancer.

The surgeon appeared arrogant and rude and the nurses seemed uncaring. It was grim.

When I left hospital there was nobody I could ring for help.

There weren’t any breast care nurses to contact.

I live miles from a hospital and have barely left the house apart from cancer appointments.

I haven’t told many people about what I went through.

If I’m asked how I am, I feel like I have to sugar-coat my experience.
I won’t ever be able to wear a bikini or low-cut tops because of the surgery.

I struggle to use my arm and hand after having nodes removed.

Also, I can’t write properly or cut up food in a restaurant.

I’m 47 and also menopausal. Most of the time I wish I was dead instead of living a half-life.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m sorry you had such an awful experience and the care you deserved fell short.

Denying how you really feel to others means you shut them out, so try to confide in one or two close friends.

Even though your body has changed you can adapt and enjoy life just as much as before.
