I am petrified of going to the dentist even though I know I need to go
DEAR DEIDRE: THE thought of going to the dentist brings me out in a cold sweat, yet I know I really need to go.
I think I need some fillings and I’ve started to opt for soft food because chewing is too uncomfortable.
I’m a 54-year-old man.
The state of my mouth is so embarrassing, I never smile in photos or laugh in real life because I’m so self-conscious.
I would just love to be able to have a relaxed conversation again and not worry about the state of my teeth.
What can I do about it?

DEIDRE SAYS: A fear of the dentist is more common than many might imagine.
Perhaps your fear started from an unsettling visit to a dentist when you were younger?
Take a look at the organisation Dental Phobia ().
They list dentists who have experience of phobic patients and can help you get the oral health you deserve.
I’m also sending you my support pack Afraid Of The Dentist to help.
