FAMILY DIVIDE

My teenage daughter is giving me hell and has zero empathy for her brother

DEAR DEIDRE: OUR family can be so toxic. At the moment, we’re not speaking but I miss our grandchildren so much.

I’m a grandma of 66 and my two sons are 35 and 31.

They’ve always been hot-heads but, then, my husband isn’t an easy man.

The boys are close. They are both married and the elder one has two daughters and the younger one has one daughter.

We fell out last summer after a barbeque at our house.

My husband told our granddaughter off for running near the barbeque and our son yelled that he should be the one to discipline her, not his father.

His brother took his side and a row broke out.

I miss the kids. How can I put this right?

DEIDRE SAYS:  Sending some flowers or writing a letter may seem old-fashioned but it can often do the trick.

Failing that, pick up the phone to the son you feel will be the most receptive and explain how much you miss them all and if possible, you’d like to draw a line in the sand.
