The love of my life dumped me after six years – now she wants me back

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN the love of my life dumped me because her family didn’t approve, I was completely heartbroken.

But now she says she made the biggest mistake of her life. I’m 30, she’s 29 and we were together for six years.

She is from a very traditional family and they are very wealthy. Her parents didn’t like that I was brought up by my mum after Dad left when I was a toddler.

I think they worried I’d be like my father. I felt judged and never got on with her family.

When she told them we were planning to marry, they said they’d never make me welcome.

She felt she had no choice but to end our relationship. I was gutted and couldn’t function for months.

Slowly, I started to pick myself up, threw myself into work and started seeing friends again.

Last week she came to see me, saying she couldn’t bear being without me.

She says she will stand up to her family and will do anything to win me back. I still love her but I’m confused.

DEIDRE SAYS:  Your ex felt torn between her love for you and her family. Now she’s realised what she’s lost.

There’s no doubt you love each other but it’s impossible to know whether she’ll be able to stand up to her family in the long term.

Try not to get drawn back in too deep too quickly.

The charity Standalone () for people estranged from family members will be able to help.
