My daughter is too good for her boozing partner – I want her to ditch him
DEAR DEIDRE: EVERYONE says my daughter is too good for her partner and it’s best if she doesn’t marry him.
I am her 59-year-old mum. My daughter is 34 and her partner, who is still married, is 40.
They’ve been engaged for six years.
He keeps promising to get a divorce but it still hasn’t happened.
I have even offered to pay for his divorce but nothing changes.
My daughter has a great job, a car and is buying her first house.

He has a decent job but drinks to excess.
He stays with my daughter all week. She washes, cooks and cleans for them both, then at the weekend he’ll make an excuse to go home where he starts drinking.
I think she’s only in this relationship because she’d be lonely without him.
MORE FROM DEAR DEIDRE
DEIDRE SAYS: As parents, we want the best for our children, but you can’t control her choices.
It may be that you will have to step back and let her learn from it.
Forcing your opinion on her may only push her further into his arms.
Your daughter needs to know you love her, no matter what happens and what decisions she makes.
Reassure her that you are there for her, even if she decides this relationship is not right for her after all.
