A heartfelt apology to your mum would be a good place to start.

Perhaps you can explain why you took such a dislike to John, but ultimately your mum has a right to choose her own partners and be happy.

Rather than lying in future, it would be better to talk things through with your mum, but ultimately respect her choices.
