FAILURE FEARS

I turned down a promotion out of fear that I’d fail

DEAR DEIDRE: IMPOSTER syndrome is holding me back at work and spoiling family life.

I was recently offered a promotion, but I turned it down because I didn’t think I could manage other people.

I am a 40-year-old woman with lots of experience and skills, so I don’t know why I always feel I’m going to fail.

Doing well in my job is crucial to me. I’m a single mother to two young children, who I need to support.

But I’m so anxious about work I can never relax in the evenings, and I feel I’m not being a good enough mum either.

I was in an abusive relationship with my children’s father, but I left him and he is no longer in our lives.

How can I start believing in myself so I can achieve my potential?

DEIDRE SAYS: Imposter syndrome is incredibly common, especially among women – even if they don’t show it.

Your history of abuse has probably also dented your confidence.

But you had the strength to leave your ex.

What’s more, your company believes in you and you have proved you are capable as an employee and single mother.

My support packs Raising Self-esteem and Standing Up For Yourself show you how to boost self-confidence.
