I’m passionate and driven but can’t get a job because of my age
DEAR DEIDRE: MOST employers want someone passionate, driven and personable. I tick all these boxes, so why can’t I get a job?
I’m 56 and have been unemployed since November last year.
For most of my life I worked in sales but after the pandemic, I felt I needed a change.
When I was a teen I dreamed of being a hairdresser, but Dad was very traditional and pushed me to get a “proper job”.
My wife and I have been sensible with money over the years, so I don’t have to worry now and she wants me to pursue my passion.
I’ve been applying for apprentice roles at salons ever since but I’m convinced people aren’t even giving me interviews because of my age.

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s great that you’re trying to pursue a career you’re really passionate about. It’s never too late.
Constant rejection can be difficult, but keep applying for roles. There will be someone who’ll give you a chance.
Perhaps speak to employers face to face, or attend industry networking events so they can see what you’re like.
