My ex-wife is refusing to help pay off the loan we got for our extension

DEAR DEIDRE: WHILE my ex-wife and I were together, I took out a loan for our new conservatory. But now we’ve divorced, she is refusing to help pay it off.

I’m 56, she is 54 and we have been separated for the last two years.

I don’t want to argue - I just want the loan paid off

We were together for 17 years but split during the pandemic.

It was pretty amicable until we got on to the conversation about money.

I decided to give my wife the house – I thought it probably meant more to her than it did to me.

But last month she rang to tell me that she had put it on the market, and had received a really competitive offer.

To be honest, I was fine with it. But I did expect some of the money from the sale to go towards paying off the loan I took out for an extension.

But she is refusing. She said: “You wanted it, so you pay for it.”

I don’t want to argue. I just want the loan paid off as the interest is costing me a fortune.

DEIDRE SAYS: Unfortunately, if you took out the loan in your name only, then your ex-wife is not liable for this debt.

But if your divorce is not yet finalised, you may be able to get this included in your settlement.
