I fell for my online chess pal – but now he wants me to move to Slovakia

DEAR DEIDRE: I AM thinking of moving 900 miles away to live with a Slovakian I met playing online chess.

I am 23 and female, he is 27 and we have been “together” for a year.

I am tempted to move to Slovakia to be the queen to his king

No issue is too small, too large or too embarrassing. Read our personal replies here.

I have always been introverted. I find it hard to make friends and have never been in a relationship before.

I hate going out and partying. My ideal night is staying in and playing games on my PC.

My favourite is online chess. That’s how I met my boyfriend.

We played a few matches together and then he messaged me in the game chat box.

Conversation flowed and we ended up exchanging phone numbers. Now we FaceTime every day.

He wants me to move to Slovakia so we can finally be together. I think it’s a good idea.

He can’t move here because of his sick mum.

But my family think I would be mad to move all that way for him.

I have never met him in real life so I am wondering, do they have a point?

DEIDRE SAYS: It is a bold move upping everything and moving to a completely new country for someone you haven’t met in the flesh.

Why don’t you arrange a weekend or two together over there, or here, to get to know one another better.

It would be good for you to get a feel for his country before you make such a big commitment.

There’s also the situation in neighbouring Ukraine to consider.
