I thought I had everything figured out but the accident changed everything.

A man of 28, I can no longer work. I’m ashamed to say I turned to alcohol and drugs to help me cope.

I have a six-year-old son who lives with his mother, my ex.

She is 27 and I recently found out she is neglecting our boy.

I am so heartbroken for my poor son that it is beginning to affect my relationship with him.

I am stuck in a rut and can’t seem to figure out what to do.

DEIDRE SAYS: I am sorry you are still suffering.

Such a traumatic experience can cause long-term difficulties.

Please don’t continue to suffer in silence. Talk to your doctor, as the right help can make all the difference.

Real neglect should not be ignored. Criticising or judging your ex will only undermine her.

Talk to the NSPCC (, 0808 800 5000) for advice.
