Mum hates my fiancée since we chose to move to the US – how can I fix it?
DEAR DEIDRE: MY fiancée and I are emigrating to the US and my mum is furious.
Now Mum and my fiancée can’t stand each other and I have no idea how to fix it.

The pair of them got on well when I first introduced my partner to the family. But it all went downhill after we said we were moving to the States.
My partner has been offered an amazing job in Chicago. It’s her dream role and so I agreed to make the move with her.
Mum is against us emigrating and blames my partner for “splitting the family up”. Whenever we get together, they end up screaming at each other.
Last time, my mum told my wife-to-be that she was a selfish, spoiled brat and a narcissist.

It is possible for them to repair their relationship, but it will require some compromise and an apology from them both.
Speak to them individually and explain that you understand why they’re both upset, but this feud is benefiting no one. Ask if they can both accept what’s happened and move forward. Getting them both to be civil is the important first step.
